Lets Talk Photography

Taken with Canon EOS R50 and edited in Lightroom Classic

I’ve always enjoyed photography. I like taking a great photo, whether its a pretty place, a special occasion for friends or family, an interesting angle or subject. I have fun editing, and seeing what else I can pull out of my shots.

I won’t pretend to be an expert. I consider myself a beginner, despite receiving my first camera 13 years ago (sheesh…). I never truly dove into the hobby beyond snapping the photos I wanted and playing with them in post. I did take one Introduction to Photography class in college and it taught me a lot of valuable basics. Although I can’t seem to recall exactly how to use Photoshop. I prefer Lightroom Classic personally. More often I feel like I’m “faking it til I make it”, but that’s okay, because its just a hobby for me. I don’t feel bad about it. I’m learning something new every time I import new images to Lightroom.

Most of the time I don’t even know what exactly I want to photograph, as in, I don’t have a particular focus. Ya know how some people have their specialty? People, occasions, architecture, nature, and so on. I know I like color, those images are really fun to edit. But then I love the timelessness, the vulnerability and almost intimate moment a black and white photo can capture too.

My first camera was a DSLR Canon Rebel T1i, a birthday gift during my senior year of High School. It was perfect timing. I brought this camera to school pretty often, trying to capture those final days before everything changes. It was this camera that I used during my photography class in college. I captured some of my first truly beautiful images, and further brought them to life in Photoshop and Lightroom. Various projects, each with a different focus, helped me learn the ins and outs of such a complicated instrument. Sure, anyone can pick up a DSLR, set it to Full Auto, and snap away (no judgement from me!). But this class taught me how to really play with settings to get all sorts of unique images. Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO… well that’s about the extent of my knowledge. Truthfully, while I generally know what each setting does and I mostly know how to apply it to my own craft, I couldn’t explain it to someone else. I told you, I really still consider myself a beginner when it comes to the finer details of working a camera.

My current carry is my new Canon EOS R50. I’ve switched over from the EF mount DSLR to the Mirrorless RF mount lenses. I picked up this camera for a few reasons. It’s smaller and lighter than my Rebel, which makes it easier to bring along on more casual outings. It’s still considered a beginner friendly camera, perfect for my casual usage. It’s capable of taking great photos, as shown above. Finally, it has some pretty good video capabilities too. This is the part I’m excited to utilize, alongside photography, because I might try to piece together a video project. I’m still learning what this camera can do and how it functions best, but its already been a lot of fun to use.

I would love to make my photography a part of this blog, alongside my writing. If I can just figure out how to create some sort of gallery page. I’m sure there’s a YouTube video for that. In the meantime, my new Instagram account is linked on my homepage. Check it out, if you feel so inclined.

Thanks for reading, and, I’m happy you’re here.
